10 Tips for People Who just Started Career

Starting a career is something that many people look forward to. It not only means that you on a path for a job you want, it also means job security most of the time. Which is something many people need in this day and age. However, now that you have that job, there are plenty of things to still keep in mind. So here are 10 great tips for those who just started on their career path.

1. Knowing what you want: This may seem simple, but many people who just start off on their career are so excited by it, that they tend to get tunnel vision of sorts. You might think, "Hey I just got a job, so I should be fine for a while." But that kind of thinking could keep you in this position for longer than you might want. So for those wanting to climb ladders and continue to move up in your career, make a plan and know what job you want to end with. This could be as easy as setting a date for when you think you should be getting promoted, or just working as hard as possible to get bumped up.

2. Showing your skills: The easiest way to get recognition for accomplishments is to simply know what you're good at, and then use it to its fullest extent. If you're good at closing sales, go for bigger sales. If paperwork is your game, then take on extra cases and make sure that your name is known as someone who can get things done in a timely but efficient manner. It's easy to focus on what you're not doing right, but few know how to use their best skills to create opportunities.

3. Being known: Again, it may seem like a simplistic task, but getting know your higher ups, and making sure they know you is a great way to further your career. Even bringing things up to them when you pass them, or talking to them about ideas, or past experience can really make you stand out. However if they don't know your face, then it will be that much harder for them to recommend you for things in the future. It's never a bad idea to know your bosses.

4. Garner new skills: A great way to not only advance your career, but to advance your own mind and intelligence is to learn new skills and techniques. Not only are you more likely to get ahead of the crowd, but if things don't work out at this career, you have a new set of skills to bring to the next one. Look especially hard for those skills that will lead you to new heights, and ones that will be useful in your everyday life.

5. Setting goals and progressive action: One of the easiest ways to get thing done is to set a goal. Even a simple one like "Do the dishes," if you see that task, then you're more likely to do it. So why not do the same thing with your career goals? It's easy enough, make a plan, write it down, and check things off when you finish them. Not only are you constantly reminding yourself of what needs to be done, but you're also more likely to keep on a path that you can see yourself checking off and making progress on. As well, a two year plan, when thought about, may seem daunting. However if you write it down, it may just be seven or eight things that need to be done. This could easily help one from feeling overwhelmed in a new position.

6. Being active about advancement: Taking a passing interest in promotion can still get you promoted, however it could take a lot longer. Being active and striving for promotion and advancement can really put you ahead of the pack. If someone knows that you are full throttle about your career, then they are more likely to give you opportunities to help you and improve. Looking and asking around about, how, when, and why the company promotes can let your superiors know that you are active about advancement, as well as give you valuable information about what you need to do in order to get bumped up.

7. Dress for success: It might be overstated, but it is a staple of anyone in a career position; dress for the job you want, not the job you have. Clothes make a big statement about who you are, and how serious you are about being there. It might sound harsh, but if you don't dress like you are a professional, then few people will take you seriously on a professional level.

8. Don't sweat the small stuff: New jobs can be stressful, and they can drain the energy out of the most energetic of people. However, showing how stressed you are can really put a damper on how people perceive you. So laugh off the small stuff, everyone makes mistakes, and showing you can roll with the punches will really tell people that you're not impulsive and quick to anger, or break under slight amounts of pressure. Which not only helps your career, it helps you as well. Apologize for mistakes, and never be afraid to ask for help if something is unclear. Asking for help is always better than messing up on your own.

9. Be social: Almost every job has more than just you and your boss working there, so try to make a friend or two. This can both be helpful in blowing off stress, as well as knowing that there is someone there for you when you need them. Need to borrow a pen? Need an extra quarter for the snack machine? Not sure where to file that piece of paperwork? Having someone in the space that you know and can easily talk to can really save you time and energy in the long run.

10. Be yourself: Many people try to find a persona or a personality that they like to put on in their workplace. Maybe this is to advance their career, or maybe it's because they just want to change in their work environment. However this could be a potential mistake if you ever see other from your workplace in the real world. So always be yourself at work, it requires a lot less thinking, and you never have to hide what someone may like the most about you.
